The visual arts program combines creative expression with the following four primary goals:
-
Create Works of Art: Refers to the creating of art works, art vocabulary, skills development, and learning about the elements and principles of design.
-
Demonstrate Aesthetic Perception: Focus upon acute awareness, well-developed observation, appreciation, taste, sense of beauty, intuitiveness, insight, and comprehension.
-
Develop a Knowledge of Art Heritage: Delineates the expected outcomes of learning about cultures, individual artists, art masterpieces, and art careers.
-
Utilize Critical Judgment of the Visual Arts: Refers to recognition of differences, evaluation, analysis, comparison, appraisal, discrimination, and wisdom in artistic choices.
The combination of these four elements allow the students to create, analyze and improve their own art and appreciate the functional and non-functional art in their environment. The students also learn to appreciate the connections between art and other curriculum areas (e.g., math, science, social studies, the performing arts, language arts).
